Ex-voto

Ex votos (from the Latin phrase ex-voto suscepto) means ‘from the vow made’. For centuries they were, and still are, carried in Europe as devotional objects. They were to give thanks for granted wishes, prayers, and intentions. The ex voto, is “the concrete testimonial of that vow’s fulfillment,” an object that stands as the material representation of the miracle itself. A shared conceptual framework underpins votive objects, and that by merit of their consecration they have become a category representing a special stage in life.
